2008

Business Associate of the Year

Award Presentation speech given by Diane Reid at the April 2008 Chapter Meeting

“I nominated one of our own for Business Associate of the year for the Colony Chapter. And after I did many of us shook our head and wondered why we never had done so before.

In March of this year, our own ABWA chapter member Dr. Kelly Smith will have been in practice in our city for 13 years. She graduated from PALMER COLLEGE OF CHIROPRACTIC in 1993.

For all of the 13 years she has been in practice here she has held at least two big annual charity drives. She offers free adjustments to her established patients and exam and x-rays to her new patients when they donated Teddy Bears or Blankets to help in the community. The Spring Teddy Bears go to the local Police and Fire

Departments, and when they didn’t need any she gives them to The Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County and/or to the Scottish Rite Hospital. The fall Blankets go to the Red Cross. They always need blankets.”

“For the last 10 years in the fall she has given free physicals to any athlete that will make a $15 donation to their own athletic department. Dr. Kelly has been do-ing that for about 10 years.

Then, if that is not enough, when there has been a need, she has tried to fill it. For example,

Not only do her staff and patients think the world of her but she does her best to make the world a little bit better. For all of these reasons, we the Colony Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association unanimously recognize Dr. Kelly Smith as The Colony’s Business Associate of 2008.”

Woman of the Year

Meet Diane Reid – one of our Chapter’s founding members and current Membership Committee person, former officer and all around do-gooder. In addition to being very involved in our own Chapter, Diane is very active in DACA and has held several board and committee positions there as well. Diane was born in Oklahoma, grew up some in California, but moved to Texas to be an Airline Hostess for Braniff International Airways. Some brothers and sisters followed her to Texas, and eventually, so did her parents. In fact, they live just up the street in Windward Haven. Currently Diane owns and runs a jury research and consulting company with a partner, and has lots of antidotes about jury selection, lawyers and the judicial process. Diane was elected as our “Woman of the Year” due to her willingness to do just about anything that needs doing for the Chapter. Congratulations Diane, on an honor that is long past due.

2009

Woman of the Year

President Andrea Oberascher was awarded Woman of Year distinction. Andrea has been a member of The Colony ABWA since June of 2006. She has been a part of the governing board and has participated in working for the chapter award of Best Practices. There are few chapters in the nation which have attained this award.  Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Andrea has worked at IBM for over twenty years. She has been recognized by IBM for her many years of volunteer work with young girls who attend the company sponsored summer camps program which fosters science and math for young women. The Colony Chapter is proud she is our Woman of the Year. The luncheon to honor all women of the year will be held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Arlington on August 15.
